Six Books Your Middle Schooler Will Love

My cousin recently asked if there was a resource that she could use to determine if books are “appropriate” for her daughter, who is in the 8th grade and a very prolific reader.

I use Common Sense Media for both books and movies.  I like to read the age recommendations and reviews that both the parents and the kids leave.  Sometimes I think the parents are being a little too conservative and need to relax, but then sometimes the reviews are really helpful and will point out things that are in a book that I’m not really ready to talk about with my 11-year-old.  Some of the kid’s reviews are pretty insightful as well.  I often think that we don’t give our kids enough credit.

Big D is also a very prolific reader, but as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a firm believer that just because he can read something, doesn’t mean that he should read it.  Some topics simply require more world and age experience to fully comprehend.  And, at eleven, I’m not ready for him to have all kinds of worldly experience or knowledge.  And he will usually admit that he’s not ready either.  Some may think he’s too sheltered, but I’m okay with that.  He has only a short time at being a kid and naive about all the atrocities that go on in the world.  I’m fine to shelter him a little longer.

Last week, Big D was on a reading rampage.  He read all of these in one week, plus the one he was reading for his literature class.  He gave them all a huge thumbs up!  I read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and When you Reach Me and enjoyed them both.  I was actually shocked how much I enjoyed The Cursed Child.  I’m a big Harry Potter fan and fully expected to be disappointed.

Six Books Recommended By a Middle Schooler for Middler Schoolers

You can click on the photos to get to Amazon and reviews of each book.  Big D and I are admittedly not very good book reviewers, other than to say, “I loved it!” or “It was a struggle to get through”, so for more adept reviews, I leave it to others who are much more skilled in that arena than I am!  It is something that we are working on in our homeschooling endeavors!

I have loads of other recs on my Pinterest board for Chapter Books where I pin books that I think either Big D or Boo would enjoy or they have already read and recommended to others.  We also still love picture books in our house, so I pin those too on a separate board.  I’m a sucker for a story with great illustrations.

I’d love to know what your favorites are!  Happy Reading!
